So, you thought the flawless glow of A listers on the red carpet was down to expensive skin creams, green juice and gallons of water?

Well in their case that may be a factor, but I discovered recently that the stars of stage and screen have another very simple beauty hack before they step out of their limos – Dermaplaning! It sounds like something off the TV show DIY SOS and, in my case, it definitely felt like an emergency when I decided to give it a go at Revive.

Exfoliation didn’t seem to be doing the trick and I’ve noticed the old “bum fluff” on my cheeks and jawline seemed to be alarmingly thicker with every advancing year.  I once tried to shave it with a razor, but it grew back straight away, and I panicked at the thought of turning into my husband and needing a shave every morning!

Zoe at Revive promised me I’d be amazed by the results that dermaplaning would give.  She promised it wouldn’t be painful and it’s also relatively quick, so on Saturday I found myself in her capable hands as she pulled my hair back in a band and cleansed my face thoroughly with an alcohol wipe.  She explained it’s essential your skin is completely clean, make up free and dry, so the antiseptic and alcohol also wipe off any creamy cleansers or oil that may be left on the skin.

Then, while Charlotte took these photos, I lay back and Zoe used a very small scalpel, taking a different area of my face at a time, to scrape off all the soft fuzzy hairs and, with it, any dead skin cells. Apart from a slight scrape and tingle sensation, it wasn’t uncomfortable at all.

Zoe worked around my forehead, then my jaw and across each cheek, even gently around the eye area and in no time at all it was done. “Before I apply the cream just pat your face gently” she said.  I was astonished – my face felt new and smooth as a baby’s!  It’s so tempting to want to keep touching it, but the advice is not to as the skin is so new that it’s best to try and avoid any dirt which could cause a breakout. I was also stunned at the sight of all the dead skin and hair she had taken off (see picture and a warning, if you had fake tan on it may look orange like mine – I know, eeeeeew!!

Christine sees the results

Zoe told me I would need to use a good quality high factor sun cream every day to protect the new skin cells (so maybe this isn’t a good one to do before a hot sunshine holiday) but I could wear make-up and it’s better to clean your brushes before applying.

When I did apply foundation (see picture) it went on like a dream. My face felt tingly and fresh and new all day – the process helps to produce fresh collagen so a double result- but I do agree avoiding the sun would be a good idea!

Make up looking flawless

I loved the feeling of newness and being free of that peach fuzz, which is so often a giveaway of age. For best results you need to have this done every four weeks – Zoe said the hair will start to come through again after about ten days, but you should never repeat before four weeks to avoid any soreness.

In my view, this is a brilliant treatment to have a few days before a big event where you may be having photos taken, like a wedding as your make up looks glowing and flawless.   I may not be sashaying down the red carpet anytime soon, but this is one treatment I’ll definitely one I’ll be having again and again
